One topic per session
Why focused sessions give you better answers — and what happens when conversations get long.
Claudioo's conversation memory is finite. Like a human in a long meeting, it can only hold so much before older details start to fade. Keeping each session focused on one task is the single biggest thing you can do to get better answers.
What happens when a conversation gets long
As you chat, every message — yours and Claudioo's — every file read, every search result, every command output goes into Claudioo's working memory. Once that memory fills up, Claudioo automatically compacts older parts into a short summary so there's room for new messages.
Compaction is lossy. The summary keeps the important things — key decisions, file paths, current task state — but exact wording and verbose tool outputs get compressed away. After several compactions on the same thread, you can start to feel it: Claudioo asks for context it had earlier, or misremembers a small detail.
The fix: a fresh session per task
Starting a new session is free, instant, and almost always the right move when you switch topics.
A focused session usually finishes well before any compaction kicks in, so you get every detail at full fidelity from start to finish. A long session about three different things will compact, and the third thing suffers.
Habits that help
- One task per session. Switch topics → new session. No penalty.
- Be specific early. Give Claudioo the important context (module name, file paths, what you've already tried) in your first message so it persists.
- Don't paste large files. Let Claudioo read them from your workspace. Pasted text takes up memory directly.
- Start fresh when something feels off. If Claudioo seems confused or is repeating itself, a new session usually clears it up faster than trying to nudge it back on track.
Agents have their own memory
When Claudioo brings in an agent for a specialized task, that agent gets its own working memory. The agent can read lots of files and do deep research without any of it taking up room in your main conversation — only the final summary comes back. So skills like /jf-prepare don't fill up your session even when they're doing a lot of work.
